As Paul stood at the end of his earthly ministry, he exhorted a young and godly Timothy to "Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching" (1 Tim. 4:16).

These are profound exhortations to which we all must be attentive. These two elements are vital for every believer, as every believer is called to minister as a member of the body of Christ. Tyndale Theological Seminary wants to be instrumental in both areas.

Pay close attention to yourself

Tyndale seeks to help students deepen their relationship with the Lord through the intensive study of God's Word, and the proper response to it in their own lives. Tyndale is committed to helping students grow in maturity and godliness, through the development of exegetical skill in handling accurately the word of truth. While there is often temptation to move directly from exegetical study to teaching, Ezra reminds us that practice comes before teaching (Ezra 7:10). James likewise encourages believers to be doers of the word (James 1:22). Tyndale seeks to prepare our students not only to do, but first and foremost we prepare them to be.

Pay close attention to your teaching

As one examines Paul's instructions to Timothy a key phrase will be repeatedly observed: sound doctrine. Clearly this concept is a foundational priority, yet we live in challenging times when sound doctrine is becoming less and less of a priority in churches around the world. Even still, Tyndale's mandate is to teach the Scriptures faithfully - emphasizing study in the original languages, and to restore sound doctrine to the pulpit through exegetical verse-by-verse teaching.

Tyndale is committed to preparing godly exegetes who are disciplined in these skills - skills which, as taught at Tyndale, are founded on literal grammatical-historical interpretation and result unashamedly in normative dispensational theology.

So, as you prayerfully consider God's direction for your preparation, please consider Paul's imperatives to Timothy - pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching!
